I'm far from political. And this blog is not an editorial. However, I do have to mention I'm ashamed of the chaos in Vancouver after the Canucks loss to the Bruins in the final Stanley Cup play off game. In my facebook feed my Edmonton city companions have been out spoken against the Vancouver hockey 'fans' that started fires, overturned cars, smashed store windows, ran away with armfuls of high ticket items such as MAC cosmetics and designer bags. Craziness.
One Vancouverite on my FB feed called us Edmontonians 'self-righteous' in our attitude against the needless riot. He has a point. There was a time where Edmonton also rioted after an Edmonton Oiler team play off game back in June 2006. But from my research it rates closer to PG then double XX. I can feel my teeth clenching as I write this, so I'm going to back up before I start ranting.
And congratulations to the Boston Bruin fans who celebrated their teams win with exuberance but class.

Would she be swept up into the mob mentality, running into designer stores to steal her always wanted Pandora bracelet? Or would she be cowering behind a building, frozen? Or pulling her boyfriend away from the chaos, running in the opposite direction? How would your character react? |

My character would be running to safety--just like I would! It's sad that sports bring out the worst in us sometimes. :(
Oh my, I didn't know this was happening. I saw the game last night (and was cheering for Boston, since my fave Flyers didn't make it this year:). Hope things settle down soon.
Good question - about what a character would do. Mine would run and hide, I'm thinking!
Have a great weekend,
Karen
Interesting question. If my character was like me ... she would be cowering, in tears, as far from the riot as possible, praying for mercy and deliverance.
Great question!
Craziness is right ... I was so surprised when I heard about these riots too ... and glad to hear that many people from Vancouver had come out to help with the clean-up this morning!
My character wouldn't be there to begin with. She's not a hockey fan. And she's underage for the bars.
It's shameful what happened. But if they had won, I doubt things would have been much different. Then it would have been a celebration rampage.
My character would roll her eyes at that for sure. Then she would walk away from any and all people who were a part of it. She's got so many problems at the moment that she wouldn't give riots a second glance.
Oh, how sad that we react to disappointment with crime. It must make God cry.
My character would hide, probably, or go on her blog and rant to get it off her chest!
My character would run too!! I don't think she is strong enough to get caught up in the craziness-- hope not!
What a sad story, to see this type of reaction. It's not unique to Vancouver, though. I've seen pretty much the same thing elsewhere in the past few years. My character would probably watch the game from home on her tv ;)
Violence like that disgusts me. I don't care what your POV, there is no excuse for it. I'll back up, too, because I can feel my temp rising, too . . .
My MC is 10, so she would be cowering for sure, but watching in fascination, no doubt.
Hi Lynn -
I think these fans need a lesson in good sportsmanship.
My character wouldn't be there because she's not a big sports fan.
Blessings,
Susan :)
My characters know nothing about hockey, so they'd probably be far, far away.
I only caught some of the coverage. I can't believe people get so excited about sports. But this will probably happen again and again at various locations.
I've come to expect this sort of behavior in Los Angeles and many other U.S. cities, but I was surprised to hear about it happening in Canada. It's just weird when people act like this.
I do have a scene in a novel which so far is only in the form of outlines and brief sketches in which their is a minor sort of riot that is almost comical. My MC is on the periphery observing the action which is basically rioters throwing snowballs at the police. It's based on an actual event that I witnessed back in 1972 when I was in college.

My characters would avoid it as well. Such a shame the riots overshadowed the Bruins' win.
Wow, fans get crazy. :-( My heroine or hero would never do something like that, because it's not heroic and I can't see it playing into a character arc very well.
tsk, tsk on those fans. Heh.
Crazy Vancouver! I saw the riots on the BBC and I couldn't believe my eyes.
What an interesting situation to imagine your character in. My mc has grown up quite sheltered, so I'm pretty sure she'd be running for safety.
OOoh good question! My character wouldn't be there though. LOL
The whole riot thing is such a strange thing. I remember talking about it a lot in pyschology class in college.
It's too bad that a few idoitic people and one incident may ruin the reputation of a city
I think my character would have cowered away.
Love hockey games! Fun game to watch live.
In the beginning of my book my MC would run but by the end she'd try and stop it.
The rioting was awful!!! I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV - crazy stuff. I was so proud of the real fans who took part in the clean up :)
My characters would probably try to leave ... I think :)
Only a writer would ask that! But it's a great question. Trying to discover how our characters would react in various situations is the fastest way to discover who they really are. I have one character who probably would have tried to stop the rioters, one who would have walked away, and another who probably would have joined them...
Since I write YA and middle grade now, it's often hard to put my characters in a lot of situations...I end up thinking, "Why would her mom let her be out that late?"
